Question of the Month: Should White Writers Tell Black Stories?

The book and the movie The Help has been a popular success. But there has been much debate on who is telling the story. For example, see Terry McMillan’s remarks from

“No. I am not going to see The Help. Because I don’t want to. My Mama cleaned house in Michigan. I saw the real version. Past tense. She was not happy cleaning house. She also didn’t bring her work home with her,” the “Waiting to Exhale” author tweeted.

And then, “When black writers write about black people white folks don’t read them. When they write about us: bestsellers.”
